Hi all,
I have to admit that all of my directories are paid ones. And this sometimes can compremise the quality of the directory.
For example you set a price for $20 a link. Now someone submit a site that is on the border line. Meaning it is not adult website or gambling, but not a great website. It has 4 pages and it is just offer an affiliate link. Will you include it? most of the time yes.
Now if it is a free directory it is easier to reject this kind of sites. You will get by far more submissions, 80% of them are crap, but the quality of the directory will be better. And how you will earn? By selling sidewide links and premium links. This can be very profitable.
If I will find a good free directory for sale, I will buy it. Starting a new one is too much effort for me right now…
Hi all,
It is well known fact that phpld is by far the most popular directory script out there. It is hard to imagine how many directories are running using this scrip.
It is very powerful script that offers the directory owner many choices to manage the directory. Not long ago they reliced a new version 3.3 I have to admit I am a bit disappointed with the aproche they took.
They put the focus on the article submission function, and I think it is useless. I never understand this article directory and why they are good for? I guess their idea is that now that Google doesn’t like directories anymore lets give him what’s they like. Content.
But it is not an original content and search engines know that. So I don’t think this is the direction directories should go for.
There is a nice feature to add a new pages, but again I find it not very useful. If you want to add more original content add a blog which gives you much more options and tools than this new feature.
I expected the new version to have much more report tools. I really miss a lot a function to report me how many submissions I had in December comparing to November and how many of them paid and so on… these tool are essenial for running a business and I need to do it using Excel which takes lots of time.
And another thing I am missing is give each category a different price and to offer discounts for more then one submission. These functions I have in Lola directory which I developed by myself and they work great.
Another function that I am missing is to send a message to all the people who submitted their sites. Something like news letter would be great.
They said it took them 9 months to develop this this version from 3.2. 9 months is a lot of time and in the end you can stay with version 3.2 - it is good enough and you don’t need to go through all the hassle of upgrade (which wasn’t easy at all…)
Bottom line - disappointing…
Hello all,
This is an opening message for this new blog. In this blog I will try to discuss many aspects of running a directory and share my knowledge with you.
It is not the best time for directories as we all know. After Google clamp down on directories many owners have lost their business and move to other project. So no more high PR…
But I think it is good thing (in away) it force the directories owners to think in different ways and make their directories better. I still find that directories have an important role and the fact is that you can always find interesting sites under them that ranks with Google around 200 for the relevant keyword.
I do hope you will find this blog helpful
